Do Omega-3’s Help Calcium Supplements Work Better?

Posted by on

There are multiple studies that have looked at the possible relationship between Omega-3 essential fatty acids from seafood and whether or not, when taken with calcium, they help the calcium work better to nourish bones. Omega-3 essential fatty acids like DHA, ALA, ETA, and EPA are plentiful in fish and also in New Zealand Greenlipped Mussel. In fact, ETA (eicosatetraenoic acid) is an Omega-3 found only in the New Zealand Greenlipped Mussel.

Omega-3 essential fatty acids cannot be manufactured by the human body, so must come from diet instead. They are known for their anti-inflammatory properties. How does this play into bone health? Well, bone is a living tissue that is constantly changing – building up and breaking down. In additional to hormonal changes, chronic inflammation is a major contributor to the disruption of bone metabolism and the increase of bone loss. Whenever inflammation occurs anywhere in the body, bone is affected and the risk of fracture increases. [1]

The good news is that Omega-3 essential fatty acids reduce inflammation, which can help preserve bone health. In addition, they can help support healthy bone density, increase the amount of calcium in bones, and can improve the bioavailability of calcium (bioavailable refers to the ability of a substance like a vitamin or nutrient to be absorbed and used by the body).[2] Additional research indicates that Omega-3’s, DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) specifically, prevent bone decay and enhance bone mineralization,[3] while improving bone density and preventing fractures.[4] Another study showed that increased consumption of shellfish was tied to higher bone density[5] and that ALA (alpha-Linolenic acid) and EPA can lower risk of hip fracture.

OMEGA-3 Essential Fatty Acids like the ones found in New Zealand Greenlipped Mussel can help strengthen bones
